It’s only a few weeks until the start of school. If you’re a parent of a school-age child, you’re probably deep in the thick of school prep! Buying new clothes, pencils, backpacks, and binders is all part of the back-to-school scramble. But, another item that should be a “must do” on the back-to-school checklist, is ensuring your child has an up-to-date child eye exam! A child eye exam plays an important part in your child’s success and will start your little student down the path to a successful school year!
Your child’s eyes are their most important learning tool! A child’s success in school relies heavily on how well they see. Even if you buy your child the best computers, pens, and books, they will not enable your child to succeed if your child doesn’t see properly! It is a parent’s responsibility to help set a child up for success. And we believe that a child’s success starts with a child eye exam!
Why Is A Child Eye Exam Before Back-To-School Important?
We think that before back-to-school is one of the best time to book kids in for a child eye exam! It is important to make sure that your child is seeing well before they start school. Seeing well can make a world of difference when it comes to how well a child performs in school. Not only does good vision help promote good grades, but it also helps a child in their ability to play and socialize with others.
Undetected Vision Problems
A child who has a hard time seeing may not even know that they aren’t seeing well. Many kids suffer and struggle with poor vision because of the simple reason that they don’t even know they have a vision problem. Often, behaviour and learning problems arise as a result of poor uncorrected vision.

Children Grow And Change Quickly
We all know that children change and grow rapidly, hence the need for all the new back-to-school clothes! But did you know that as their limbs lengthen, their eyes also grow and change as well! This constant growth can cause a child’s vision to change rapidly. It is not uncommon to see a child one year and say they have perfect vision and see them the next year, only to fit them in glasses for full-time wear. Because the eyes can also go through growth spurts, it is recommended that kids are seen annually for a child eye exam.
Alberta Health Care acknowledges the importance of a child eye exam. They also know that your child’s success is related to their vision. Because of this, Alberta health care covers annual eye exams for complete and partial eye exams for children up to the age of 18 (inclusive).
